"Big gators like this are a blast to catch," said outdoors columnist Mark Walters, who caught this huge northern pike on the Mississippi River near Trempealeau on Jan. 29.

44-inch northern pike

Joe Chadwick and I fished Cold Springs on the Mississippi River Feb. 12 with tip-ups. We almost got skunked until Joe hooked this behemoth pike on a shiner. He was fishing about four feet below the ice. It was a long, drawn out battle and I assisted Joe in landing it. The pike measured 44 inches even. The excellent specimen will be headed to the taxidermist. (Photo and caption by Len Harris)

Curtis Fischer of Eastman was tip-up fishing on the Mississippi River with friends recently. They caught several nice fish, with the show stopper being this 40-inch, 19-pound northern pike. Fischer was using a shiner as bait.

Kaiden Olson and Joe Chadwick of Soldiers Grove were fishing on the Mississippi River Jan. 16 with tip ups. They each scored a nice pike. Kaiden is 6 years old and the son of Sarah Olson of Soldiers Grove.

A pair of Prairie du Chien area fishermen caught this 72lb catfish on a bankpole in the Mississippi River this summer (2012).
